HOW TO MAKE AN INITIAL APPOINTMENT
You must be currently registered for classes at TCU in order to be eligible for services at the Counseling, Testing, and Mental Health Center. Our services are available at no extra charge, excluding national tests such as CLEP or ACT. Please bring your Student ID to your first appointment. We are available for walk-in crisis appointments from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on weekdays. If there is an emergency after hours, please call the Campus police at 817-257-7777 or dial 911.
The initial appointment with CTMH is called an Initial Consultation (ICON). This is a time for you to discuss with an intake, or ICON, counselor why you are currently seeking services. Your ICON counselor will be a staff therapist at CTMH, but may or may not be your assigned therapist should you attend sessions after the ICON (students also have the right to request a different therapist at any point during their treatment). ICON appointments are made on a same-day, first come first serve basis, and are available in both the mornings and afternoons. This means that if you know you have approximately 1 hour available in your schedule on a specific day, you should call our office early that morning. This same day appointment system allows for more students to be seen, and for your appointment to be at a time that works best for you. Because there are a limited number of ICON appointments, we encourage you to call our office early on the day that you would like to be seen. If there are no ICON appointments available on that day, you will be asked to call back on another day that works in your schedule. Our administrative staff will also ask for your name in the event that ICON appointments are not available when you call back. If ICON appointments are not available after you call a second time, an ICON appointment can be schedule in advance for you.
Please call our office at 817-257-7863 or come by the Brown-Lupton Health Center at 2825 Stadium Drive (West Entrance) to schedule an ICON appointment. While scheduling your ICON visit, you will be asked to visit our website at www.counseling.tcu.edu prior to your appointment and complete our intake paperwork. This packet contains our privacy and confidentiality statements, information about what to expect in counseling, forms that obtain basic contact information about you, and forms that help your counselor best assess why you are seeking counseling and the best course of treatment. Typically, students complete this paperwork in approximately 10-20 minutes. Please be advised that these forms cannot be submitted online and that CTMH counselors will only review forms submitted in person by students who have a scheduled appointment. If you are unable to print the forms, than please arrive to the appointment 15 mintues early to complete the paperwork.
Once you have schedule and completed the intake paperwork you will then have the chance to speak with an Initial Consultation (ICON) counselor. During your ICON, you and a staff counselor will decide how to best meet your needs. You may be assigned to a CTMH staff therapist for additional appointments, or you may be referred to another University office or community provider that would be more appropriate for your needs. During your ICON. you will also be given another copy of our Services and Policies, which provides detailed information about scheduling and cancelling appointments, as well as confidentiality and privacy policy and practice.
